Navy’s First Playdate

Navy had her first play date with London.  Both love princesses and fake cooking, so we thought it would be a slam dunk.  And London is Scout’s age, and in his primary class, so we thought there would be meshing there too.

The carpet picnic, princess play, game play and everything else turned out pretty solid.

A couple of interesting facts –
Navy is a little slow on the social scale.  She had a few hours of fair play in her, but then it was all about her.  London would just look at her antics in amazement.  For now, I am blaming it on “She’s TWO!” (The most common phrase I get as I pick her up from preschool these days!  Don’t mind that she is three next week.  But until then –I’ll take the “two” excuse.)
-
Scout was a good sport on the girly stuff.  He tried to coax London over to his Hot Wheels track, but she wasn’t having it.  So then he came up with tying three balloons to his limbs, and kept them there all day.  Showing off?  I’m not exactly sure.
-
Although I thought London would want to RUN home, we had the secret weapon.  Nonnie just might be her favorite thing in the world.  So when Nonnie asked he if she wanted to go to the mall later, she was psyched.  So we headed to the mall for a light dinner, some browsing, and of course some Disney princess dresses for the two princesses.
-
It might have been the longest play date in history (11 am - 6:30 pm), but it was really fun.
And I think Scout, Navy and I would have her back as often as she would like!

Homework

Each day Navy goes to school, she brings home Scout’s worksheets.  So while she is away, we work on them together, and then practice reading.  Sometimes he tries to give me a little grief, but I know he secretly likes to do them, because he always makes sure I collect them and “turn them in” to Miss Dianne.
p1120655.jpg
And as far as the reading goes, my boy is a stud.  We constantly practice three letter words in the car, and he sounds them out and tells me what the word is.  He has gotten really good in just the few short days we have been working on them.
img_3032.jpg
So I brought out the BOB books yesterday, and he whipped right through a few of them.  He is a smart little guy, and he loves to learn.  But I will admit…there might be a carrot dangling in front of his face.  I told him that when he could read (get through any BOB book, or some of the Dr. Seuss books), AND he has finished the Book of Mormon (only two of the eight books left), I will pack up our car, and we will take a road trip to Utah the next day.  He was psyched on the deal, and is putting his shoulder to the wheel!

Mobile

p1120665.jpg
Nothing is cuter than to look back toward Dash’s crib and see his little head high in the air, with his little neck arched to see his fishy mobile.  I remember Scout doing the same thing, and love the curiosity.

It’s like nothing else in the world exists!

Cooking

Navy’s kitchen she got for Christmas has been a hit!  She dies over it, and is constantly making someone something.  And Scout has made his way into the kitchen, and is the perfect sous chef.
img_3019.jpg
Sweet thing always has to have her apron on, and she has an imagination that goes for days.  I love that in her mind, she comes up with masterpieces and force feeds them to everyone.
img_3018.jpg
This cookie set from Megan has been their favorite.  They think they are quite the bakers.
The interesting thing is I knew Navy would love this kitchen, but Scout really does like it too.  But when I think about it, it makes sense.  Ever since he was little, he would crawl into my lap, and we would watch cooking shows.  And then, he was always at my side when I was making dinner.  He has always been my sous chef, and over the years, I have taught him how to use a knife, stir things, grease a pan, grate cheese, etc.  And now, he makes my mom record “Chopped” so that he can watch it from her bed as he falls asleep.  Now doesn’t amaze you that the kid will cook up a storm with me day after day, but won’t try a single morsel?  He’s my very own walking oxymoron!

Nonetheless, the kitchen does the trick for these two.
Too bad the vacuum in the back doesn’t have the same affect.

Cuddler

img_2901.jpg
Scout has always been a cuddler.  So it didn’t surprise me at all to see him completely nestled against Micah — even with his body cast on.  His current usual spot is in Nonnie’s bed, and she confirmed that Scout can still “coozie” with the best of them.  He always starts across the bed, but he always ends up right next to her about half way through the night.  this kid is pretty amazing.  He doesn’t even flinch at being in a cast.  In fact, he does everything he wants to do.  And I tell the absolute truth when I say…..I HAVE NOT HEARD EVEN ONE COMPLAINT FROM HIM!  Not one.  I’d like to take some sort of credit, but what I really think it is — he was sent to me with about the best disposition I have ever come across.

In Good Company

And I quote…
“Babe….whatever you do…DO NOT cut Scout’s hair while he is in his cast.  I just got my hair cut, and I have a piece of hair down my jeans that is driving me crazy…and I can’t find it!  Can you imagine some of his hair getting down his cast?!”
-
But the problem was…
Ever since I was best friend with Gary Samuelian, and he had some weird ticks (which a doctor called a very mild form of turrets), I have had those same ticks.  It is mostly blinking a weird way.  It mostly comes out when I am tired or a bit stressed.  Well, I don’t know if it is because he has been observing me in my latest stressed phase, or more likely, his bangs were getting a little too long — Scout was taking on my weird blinking!  And I wanted to have NONE of that.  So the next morning, against my husband’s better judgement, we broke out two capes and a few towels to cover Scout impeccably.  The hope — no hair down that cast!

Unfortunately, Micah’s warning had me spooked, so I only let my mom cut the front and top of his hair.
Afterwards, we showered him down over the tub, and I baby wiped every little speck of him.
As far as we can tell (five days later), all is well.
Except for one little thing.
My boy is sporting the beginning stages of a mullet.
-
The good news…remember that haircut Micah called me after.
The one were he lost a hair in his jeans?
That lady must have been flustered while she cut, because he came home with his very own…..
MULLET!

The Boys

Two days after Christmas, Seth’s family came into town.  And it WASN’T a quiet entrance with eight kids under 10 going non stop!  While they were here, Scout and Navy were in heaven!  I literally didn’t see them unless I went into the family night room where there was a LOT of action.   And if they weren’t in the family night room, we were all at the park, or at I Love Bagels, or even at the beach — where Scout sat patiently in his stroller while he watched all of the kids play.
img_3000.jpg
Here are the boys.
Thank goodness for Dash, because out of the seven boys, he was the only one who was under the radar.  The rest made themselves known!
img_2993.jpg
But don’t worry.  We did have an occasional quiet moment.  But those moments are when I felt the need to get up and check to see what was going on.  This time, they all had their dollars out, and were making “deals”.  Or more like….Covey was trying to con them both out of their money.  Covey was bummed when I showed up on the scene.  I told him that his quarters could NOT be traded for Grant and Scout’s dollars.
Even if his quarters were shiny!

First Cast Casualty

Scout’s cast could be considered a deadly weapon.  I accidentally scraped my knuckle across it, and had a “cast burn” for about a week — and it hurt!  But I have nothing on Christian.  The poor guy was being chased by Spencer (very typical), and when he fell into the corner, his eye met Scout’s cast.
img_3013.jpg
Within minutes, his eye had a serious shiner.
img_3015.jpg
Even after ice and pressure (like boxers do), he still had a very ugly eye.  But the kid was in good spirits about ten minutes after it happened.  He started to think he looked tough, and couldn’t wait to show his friends at school.
img_3011.jpg
And just to think it was only moments the little jokester was hopping into Dash and Rosie’s picture.
What a difference a minute makes!

Love Him

img_2955.jpg
This boy is my secret best friend.  He adores me, and won’t look away from me when he can see me.  He also cries for others, but when I hold him, he calms down and falls asleep in my arms.  He talks to me all day, and makes little spit bubbles come out of his mouth.  He smiles at me all morning long, and almost turns his face inside out at times because he is trying to smile so big.  I absolutely adore him!
img_2954.jpg
This little impromptu photo shoot was on his favorite blanket.  I love this shot because it reminds me of the back bends I used to do in ballet where I could touch my toes to my chin.  I was always scared of child #3, but I have been proven wrong.  Child #3 just might be the best yet!  Time will tell.  So far, he is definitely in a three way tie for first!

Ringing in 2012!!!

Last year we banged pots and pans at the New Year.  This year, Scout asked several times when he got to do it again.  So this year, at the New York New Year, Scout and his cousins all banged pots and pans up and down the street.
img_2989.jpg
Scout had help from Micah.
img_2984.jpg
Almost naked Icka was fine on her own!
img_2991.jpg
And the group had a blast.
img_2980.jpg
But I’ll say even though Scout’s favorite part was the banging, Seth’s kids might have liked Micah’s fireworks even more!  Looks like five boys who all take after their dad!

New Year’s Eve has always been a little anticlimactic in my eyes.  that is until I had kids.  I love that it is fun to them.  So as simple as it is, it has become one of my favorites because it is one of theirs!
