Some locals told us about the most amazing find!!! At really low tide this morning, the clam beds were exposed, and we went clam digging!
It took Micah and I a few minutes to figure it out, but when I pulled up our first clam, and it was this huge…we were sold!!! We immediately went back to the shore to wake up the kids to come. It was early, so at first — only die-hards were interested. Meaning…only Navy was interested.
Micah taught her the ropes, and she was an immediate professional.
It was clam after clam!
She even found a few starfish on the exposed shore. Her loot grew tenfold this picture by the end!
But beware!
These little lurkers were sometimes mistaken for clams…and it scared me every time!
Scout ended up clamming with us after I headed back to watch the littles, and all of us count it as one of our favorite things of our trip so far.

As we made our way through Washington towards the Oregon border, we saw a big sign on the side of the road…and I turned!
It said “shuck and eat your lunch”….OBVI!!!
We headed into the oyster farm, and shucked and ate.
After a demonstration, the kids all mastered the art.
(Update: while in San Diego two months later at a fish restaurant, Pippi saw some oysters and said, “Mom…can you get me some oysters and I will shuck them.” HAHA!!!)
The eating went well for Pippi and Dash (probably due to the mignonette).
Navy hated it, and spit hers out over the railing.
It probably goes without saying that Scout never tried one.
And Micah and I both were surprisingly not disgusted…again…the mignonette.
Right before Oregon, we stopped at our last place in Washington.
Long Beach is where we finally got our three youngest sweatshirts. Pippi has been cruising in the teeniest tiniest outfits alongside her dad who is in his down coat. There has been no complaining, but Micah insisted it was time to get our kids something warm on these cold beaches.
We hit up a farmer’s market in Long Beach. Then, as I went to get our broken window looked at, the kids went to an arcade. (Obviously dad was in charge.) I don’t have any pictures — again dad. But I do have a dent in our wallet — again dad.

Right after Long Beach, we crossed the border into Oregon, and Micah’s most anticipated part of the trip.
Astoria, Oregon is where Goonies was filmed, and Micah had a list of stops.
The county jail was perfect — even with the jeep and its bullet holes.
The best part of our Astoria tour, was stopping at Mikey and Data’s house. they live at the top of a one way street that has signs everywhere to DO NOT ENTER! Well….when you drive hundreds of miles to see those famous houses…YOU ENTER! As we drove up the street, there was a woman “gardening” (or waiting) on the side of the road. We drove up the one lane road, and she got up to see what we were doing. The key was…I NEVER MADE EYE CONTACT. We drove to the top. We then made a three point turn in the tight spot. Then we were ready to drive back down when she finally clued into our tourist ways. As we started our descent, she was MAD. She lunged towards Scout’s side door, and tried to open it. It was locked, and I slowly kept driving. When it was all said and done, it was the BEST! The kids were dying with laughter. It was so fitting with the Goonies movie that we got a clean getaway. After our experience, Tristen said that she has seen a whole news report about the crabby lady who lives in Mikey’s old house, and has it all boarded up and gets furious with tourists. My advice…move! Micah got his fill of Goonies, and is looking forward to Cannon Beach to see the Goonies rock tomorrow.

Our final stop today was our first beach in Oregon. I was miles and miles of beautiful sand, that we drove out on, and miles and miles of exploring!
The fact that you can just drive out on the sand is so rad!
We played and played on this beach.
And then we explored and explored on this beach.
And finally…Pippi danced and danced on this beach, in her warmest new sweatshirt and unders.
The cold will never take her down!
