I’ve mentioned it before, but I have been on the waiting list for over three years to get this local garden plot. Scout, Navy and I go visit it regularly so I can get them excited to have our own. (Little do they know that one of the primary reasons I want this plot is to teach my little ones the meaning of work.) So two weeks ago, I got the long-awaited call that we got it. When we went to take a look at the location of it and the size, we couldn’t be happier. It is a 20×20 space that is in a little sectioned off area (which will help me contain my chitlins), and it has an ocean view. Not bad. So the first thing on the agenda — clean the space out and prepare it for my future gardening. This was going to be a huge fete, but Micah surprised me on V Day by telling me that he was going to build contraptions for me, till the soil, add mulch, etc. SWEET! I can’t wait to see the “after” picture.
On the agenda….We are going to add a trellis for berries, wiring for a few espalier trees, three good-sized garden beds for me, and another biggie for the kid’s garden, a bench for Mama Mia’s good company, a wired area for climbers such as sweet peas, and the very best thing of all — Micah is going to make me a scarecrow! Can’t wait to see it after it is all finished. Scout is totally excited, and has already said that he will be planting carrots and potatoes. Now I am crossing my fingers that I have a green thumb. Any shade of green will do!
