Our family night was rad tonight.
I kept telling the kids that a special guest was showing up for it.
They guessed everyone under the moon…but never guessed the right person — Grandpa!

We have had a problem lately in our household.
It is called “Overreacting”!
So I was having a real life First Responder talk about why they are called “First Responders” and not “First Reactors”.
Although he was ultra uncomfortable to be “public speaking”, Grandpa did a good job of telling the kids about what he did as a fire captain when he first got to an emergency.
He talked about assessing the situation, making a smart determination, and proceeding with a plan.
I asked a few questions about why they didn’t just get there and make a rash decision, and we had a good discussion about not getting out of control to just make things worse.
He then told a few examples and even did a demonstration.
It was awesome.

I talked to the kids a bit more about it, and we all decided to become “responders” and not “reactors”.
That night was a very calm night.
The next morning however, started to get a bit crazy.  The kids were all getting their backpacks ready for school, when Navy started to get mad at Scout about something.  As she was going from 1 to 100, Dash quickly inserted, “Navy… you are first reacting.  Assess the situation and start first responding.”
They listened!
