Storm Chasers

We all woke up extra early, to thunder and lightning this morning.  In honor of the rare cool weather, I told the kids to get dressed, and we would go and chase the storm.  Within minutes we were driving to Capo beach, where we had a 360 degree view of awesome lightning.  While it was storming, we read our morning scriptures.  And it was very fitting, that we were reading about the storm that Nephi’s family endured while on their boat.  It was all, really cool.
And then it was bagels and school, to complete our fun-filled morning.

Saturday Chores Rover

This is how our current Saturday mornings go….
Scout hops up at the crack of dawn, and gets everything done immediately.  He gets an 8 out of 10 for quality.
Navy gets up leisurely, and gets to her chores when she is fully awake.  She gets a 10 out of 10 for quality.
Dash gets up the latest, and breaks down when he gets his chores, balling the words “why do I ALWAYS get the hardest job?!”  He gets a 9 out of 10 for quality (about five hours after the others have been scored because he sits in a tiff about the unfairness of the workload).
Pippi happily goes from sibling to sibling and becomes the rover all morning long.

Today, she comforted Dash in the towels he took two hours to bring in.  They laid in them because they were warm from the sun, and giggled.

Apparently, she put some motivation back into him, because about ten minutes later, they were finally doing his job.

And then she went to help Navy, as the eagle-eyed sweeper.

Patterns with Pips

Pippi and I pulled out the pattern blocks today, and she was awesome at them.  I made the big one above, and Pippi made the little all by herself.  She was amazingly careful, and good at patterns.  I was very impressed with her.
She was impressed with herself also, because she made me keep them out all day long for everyone to see.  Nonnie saw it right after she made it.  The kids saw hers after they got out of school. And when Daddy got home from work, he was immediately escorted up to see her creation.

And then she invited him to sit with her, as they created a few more masterpieces.

A Hot Walk

Amidst a massive October heat wave, my kids were not thrilled to take a hike before we went to our primary practice.  That’s saying a lot, because my kids are usually game for all things adventure, but it was HOT — about 100 degrees.

So like most things they don’t like, I made a game out of it.  We would run from shade patch to shade patch. It was working for Scout, and it was partially working for Dash.  But Navy wasn’t swayed one bit.

Navy’s Spelling Test

img_5015-2016-10-21-at-14-27-59.jpg
I was so pleased with Navy, who got 100% on her regular spelling words, and 100% on her extra credit words.  We were both bummed on her Chinese, where she missed two…but when Navy contested one of them, it was made correct.  I asked Navy how she knew it was actually right, and she said, “Mom…I totally knew it, and whoever corrected it didn’t know it”.  And her teacher totally agreed.  Nice work Navy…who can see something more than just a bunch of chicken scratch.
I’d say that 23/24 on a Mandarin and English spelling test, where she only had a week to learn her words is pretty good.
(Please note number 10 is “dash” for her spelling word!  She got the biggest laugh about that — like she had a one up on the test because she already knew how to spell her brother’s name!)

Pippi’s First Worksheets

img_2160-2016-10-20-at-14-48-28.jpg
I was setting out some worksheets for Dash to do, when Pippi came to me all set to do her own “homewook”.

I found a book with perfect worksheets for her to do, and set her up.
Dash and she were working together for about an hour, and Pippi loved being a big kid.

And I was floored at what a great job she did.
She matched the colors of things, and drew lines between them.  Yes, her lines were a little bumpy, but she never got one wrong.  And she held her pen pretty well.  By the end of her worksheets, Scout, Navy, Dash and I were all watching and cheering her on!
I’d say this isn’t bad for a girl who just turned three, two weeks ago!

Worm Alert

When Navy got in the car after school, I handed back a snack I had brought her.  She told me she couldn’t eat it because her hands were too dirty.  I was a little surprised to hear that because she never says her hands are too dirty, so I glanced back.  And then my eyes got huge when I saw what she was talking about!  I’m glad she refrained….because that screams pin worms!

Milkshake

I wish these two weren’t siblings, so I could one day put this in their wedding video!

White Trash Walk

I texted this picture to Micah, of the walk I took with Britni and Emily.
I wrote “Am I the most white trash” under it.
In my defense, Pippi had pajamas and princess heels on before she had to undress because she was too hot.
When I spoke with Micah, he said he didn’t really understand the text, because that is what our kids always look like.

Innovative Navy

When Dash was sad that he didn’t have his own Pokemon card folder, Navy took it upon herself to solve his problem.  On the right is Scout’s folder.  On the left is Navy’s homemade folder for Dash.  Honestly, Navy is the sweetest and cutest girl on earth.  She is always everyone’s advocate when they feel down and out.  I get a head rub when I’m down.  Pippi gets a playmate when she is down.  Scout gets secret favors, (like food to his room when he is sent there) when he is down.  And in this case, Dash got a new Pokemon folder when he was down.
